Doença infecciosa bacteriana que afeta principalmente os pulmões, a tuberculose mata milhares de brasileiros a cada ano. Aqueles que sobrevivem precisam lidar com complicações na saúde (nem sempre relacionadas à doença) que, a depender das condições sociais em que vivem, podem piorar o bem-estar e levar ao óbito mais cedo que a média da população. Pesquisadores da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e da London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, no Reino Unido, estudaram o que ocorreu ao longo de cinco anos a mais de 15 mil pacientes diagnosticados com a doença em 2010 no estado de São Paulo

Em 2018 o Brasil vivenciou uma epidemia de febre amarela. Um estudo da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) com colaboração norte-americana investigou pacientes que contraíram a doença naquele período e comprovou que há envolvimento cardíaco nessa infecção.
